Philanthropy
The Zeta Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is dedicated to following the 1,2,3's of Philanthropy.
Each semester we donate our time to volunteering in the community both through service and through fundraising ventures.
In Fall 2007 we held a clothing drive to provide local teenagers with adequate clothing, went door-to-door on Halloween
to collect canned goods for the local food bank, held a casino night where we raised over $200, participated in a night
of awareness on homelessness, held an Alumni/Philanthropy event with an auction and raised over $700 for Free the Children
and raised $240 for the Rose McGill fund through magazine orders. In the Summer we got together and participated in Relay for Life
and raised over $1,300 for cancer research
Last semester we had an ongoing commitment with Nutrition for Learning which provides public school children with healthy breakfasts
before school and an openness to helping the local Food Bank upon request. We have collected VHS's and DVD's for a regional spinal cord
injury clinic for patients to have a large variety of movies to watch as well as collected roughly 100 books to be donated to a local public
school in support of the principles of RIF. Our Philanthropy Project last semester was to create children's books and bookmarks that encourage
reading. In April we held our annual Breast Cancer Fundraiser titled Decadence. Volunteers made cheesecakes and guests paid $5 to eat as much as
they want. Over the summer we once again participated in Relay for Life to raise money for cancer research.
Through our New Member workshop we discuss the importance of the Foundation and how it can contribute to the growth and security of all Kappa's.
A member of our chapter has received funds from the Rose McGill Fund so it is very important to us to contribute where we can. We have been
encouraging members to purchase magazine subscriptions for family members and friends to further increase fundraising for the Fund.
Every semester we encourage members to apply for the Foundation scholarships and provide them with the information and resources to help them with their application process.
During our New Member period we do an extensive workshop on the scholarship aid and application process that is available to members.
Handouts are provided and reminders are made as the semester goes on. The members that have received financial assistance present
their experience to the group to show a direct connection. Every semester our Chapter collects children's books for local
public schools. The most common ways these books are used are: 1) Given to children as a reward for reading and thus
creates an incentive and encourage reading and 2) Donated to families that do not have the funding to purchase their
own books and 3) Used in the school's library. Last semester we collected over 100 books.
In both Winter 2007 and Winter 2008 we have used our Philanthropy Project to create learn-to-read books
and bookmarks to go along with our book drives.
The Zeta Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is always consciously seeking to find new and beneficial ways
to help the Foundation, the community and the world at large. We have always been a very small chapter
and take pride in the large success of our philanthropic initiatives. Our girls are thankful for our
ability to help others and do so when the opportunity presents itself.
